Should I repipe my house, reroute or just repair?

Answer 9 plain questions about what you are seeing, the pipe you can see and the house. The check sorts it into a repair, a reroute, a repipe or something else first, with next steps. Nothing is sent anywhere.

The check

Every question is about something you can see, remember or read on a report. Nothing asks you to open, cut or test anything.

What brought you here?
How many supply-pipe leaks has the house had in the last few years?
What pipe do you see at the water heater or under the sinks?

Gray plastic is often polybutylene; dull gray threaded metal is often galvanized steel.

When was the house built?
What does the house sit on?
If the pressure is low, where is it low?
If the water is discolored, which tap?
Is there an attic someone can work in?
Is the problem a slow drain, a sewer smell or water backing up?

Drains and the sewer line are a different system from the supply pipe.

Your result

Questions about the check

Can anyone tell whether a house needs repiping without opening walls?

Partly. Pipe material shows at the water heater, the main shutoff and under sinks, and pressure and flow can be measured without opening anything. Concealed pipe and the slab are judged from those clues and the leak history; a symptom alone rarely proves the cause.

Is one slab leak a reason to repipe the whole house?

Usually not. One failed line under the slab is typically rerouted overhead or repaired in place. A second or third leak in a different place, or galvanized or polybutylene pipe, is when a whole-house repipe becomes worth pricing.

What happens after I get a result?

A walk-through, then a written estimate. It checks the pipe material, measures static pressure at a hose bib, looks at the attic or crawlspace, and lists the permit, the test and the patch scope as separate lines.

A walk-through checks the pipe, the pressure and the routes, and turns the result into a scope and a price.
